Warrenville, Illinois, June 1999 - - Power Trends, Inc. has just unveiled the Excalibur™series, its new line 5W to 100W isolated and non-isolated DC/DC converters. The Excalibur™ series are the first DC/DC converters to feature open frame housings with the ability to mount the converter in either vertically or horizontally. The horizontally mounted converters can be configured for either through-hole or surface mount, making the Excalibur™ series the first 100W surface mount converter available today! By mounting the converters vertically, the Excalibur™ series provides the smallest PC board footprint in the industry. Products in the Excalibur™ series also feature synchronous rectification for high efficiency and digitally programmable output voltages as low as 1.3V. The first two products to be released in the Excalibur™ series are the PT6700 series a 13A output non-isolated converter, and the PT4480 series, a 48V input, 100W output isolated converter.

The PT6700 is a new series of 13A high-efficiency, non-isolated converters within the Excalibur™ family. Using synchronous rectification, the PT6700 provides greater than 90% conversion efficiency. With input voltages of 3.3V, 5V, or 12V, it boasts many user-friendly features such as a standby function and differential remote sense that automatically compensates for any voltage drop from the converter to the load. Other features include short circuit protection, over-voltage drive for an external crowbar, and power good signal. The PT6700 series offers digital 5-bit programmable output voltages from 1.3V to 3.5V and is packaged in a unique open-frame 23-pin SIP package (1"x2.6"x0.5") that can be mounted vertically or horizontally, either through-hole or surface mount. Samples are available now.

The PT4480 is a new series of high-efficiency 100W isolated DC/DC converters within the Excalibur™ family. With full telecom input voltage range (36V to 75V), environmental performance and features, the PT4480 is the first 100W DC/DC converter available in a surface mount package.

The PT4480 series offers industry leading features such as digital 5-bit programmable output voltages from 1.3V to 3.5V, remote on/off, differential remote sense, N+1 current sharing, over-current, over-temperature, and over-voltage protection. Using synchronous rectification, the PT4480 provides 88% conversion efficiency. Other features include an ambient operating temperature range of –40°C to +85°C, 1500 VDC isolation, and standard differential mode input filter. The PT4480 is packaged in a unique open-frame 26-pin package (1.5"x3.6"x0.5") that can be mounted vertically or horizontally, either through-hole or surface mount. By mounting the PT4480 vertically, it occupies less than a third of the PC board space of industry standard half-bricks. Samples will be available in four weeks.
